Practicing Self-Care at Work

Usually when we think of self-care we think of ways we can take our minds elsewhere for a little while and do something we find relaxing. While this is typically the case, there are ways we can practice self-care even when we aren’t in the most relaxing of environments. Many of us have jobs that require us to work outside of the home and today we’re talking about ways you can practice self-care even while you’re at your job. Sounds a little crazy, right? Self-care and work don’t always go hand in hand. But there are simple and quick ways to bridge the gap between your daily grind and finding balance.

Take a Brain Break

You might have heard this phrase from your kids’ classrooms but the reasoning is sound. Our brains can’t function at full capacity all day, every day. Our brains need a break in order to keep being productive. Each hour or so, take five minutes to turn away from your computer. What you do in those five minutes is totally up to you, but getting away from your work will help you be more energized on the other side of your break.

Stretch

Whether you sit at a desk most of the day or are up on your feet, taking the time to stretch your muscles can do wonders for your body. Reach your arms up over your head and roll your neck from side to side. If you are in a place where you can’t stretch outwards, try tensing the muscles in your body one at a time and then releasing them to relax.

Chat with a Coworker

Finding the time to engage in human interaction outside of the normal work chat is great for your mental health. Building relationships with those we work with can help create a deeper sense of belonging at your job. Even if you keep the conversation light and simple, getting to know and chat with someone you work with is excellent self-care.

Treat Yourself to Lunch

Choose a place you like to grab lunch from and treat yourself. Having a great meal in the middle of your work day will not only give you something to look forward to in the morning, but will leave you fueled for the rest of the day as well.

Strategically Place Rewards

If you’re extrinsically motivated, try building in small rewards into your work day. This could be things like, “When I finish clearing my emails, I’ll listen to that new Taylor Swift song.” Little things like this will keep you motivated to crush your goals while also giving yourself a little treat. Definitely a win-win!

While work can sometimes be stressful and action-packed, there are tons of ways you can incorporate little slices of self-care into your 9 to 5 routine. These little things will make a big difference over time and will help you feel happier and more settled overall.
