“I Don't Have Time for Self-Care.”

“I don't have time for self-care.”

“Self-care is for women who don’t have kids.”

“Putting myself first is selfish.”

Do any of these sound familiar?

I just got back from a retreat focusing largely on how to reclaim yourself as a woman. We leaned heavily into self-care and let me tell you, for the first time in a long time I feel incredible. Before the retreat I was a woman who might have said something similar to those quotes above. I grappled with the idea of putting myself before my kids constantly. But the truth is, it's not so cut and dry. It's not a struggle of me versus them. It’s so much simpler than that.

A weight has been lifted off my chest, which is so strange considering I didn't even feel it before. Now that I am home from the retreat, I know I have to make time for myself. It’s a necessity for me. I know now that I don’t have to pour from an empty cup. I am a better person for carving out the time to go on my retreat. Being a better person as a whole radiates into other areas of my life: a better wife, a better mother, and a better business owner.

Maybe self-care for you isn’t going on a retreat. Maybe it’s more like going out to lunch with a girlfriend, splurging on a new lipstick, or finally making it to that yoga class. Make the time because you are just as important as they are.
