Sanity Savers for Winter Break

We all remember the magical feelings that came with winter break as a child. Carefree days without the worries of school piled one on top of the other. However, as an adult, those blissful moments seem to be fleeting as we struggle to keep our sanity intact for the two weeks our kids are home. While it can feel daunting thinking about your tiny humans being home for an extended period of time, there are ways to break up the monotony and curb the feelings of cabin fever until they trot back to school once more.

Get Outside

Even though it’s winter time there are plenty of things you can do outside. Bundle up the kids and go for a hike at the park. Stroll around a downtown area and look at the lights. If there’s snow on the ground, go sledding, cross country skiing, or build a snowman. The fresh air will help you feel rejuvenated and moving your body will feel great.

Get Crafty

Save all those boxes and wrapping paper from the holidays and challenge your kids to make something out of it. Maybe it will turn into a new fort in the basement, or a series of costumes they use to create a skit. They’ll be busy for hours!

Make the Ordinary Extraordinary

Taking a simple activity like making dinner or watching a movie and turning up the volume a little can make things so much fun. Put on themed music while you cook a spaghetti dinner and suddenly you’re in Italy. Or take the time to make some popcorn and get boxes of candy and it’s like you’re at the movie theater. These little moments will be the things your kids remember for years to come.

Take Time for Yourself

No one said you have to be the queen of bubbles and sunshine for two weeks straight while your kids are on break. Be sure to schedule time for your own personal self-care and to enjoy something just for you. These could be quick 15 minute breaks or maybe an entire night out with friends. Either way, remember to take care of yourself!

While it may seem like a stressful task to have your kids home for winter break, doing a few simple things each day can make a big difference in the way you enjoy them being home. No matter what you choose to do with their time off, we hope you get some time to relax and be in the moment with your kids.
