Morning Routine for Stay at Home Moms
Mornings can be super stressful in a house with kids. There are so many moving parts and timelines to keep track of. Many moms feel that mornings are the worst part of their days because of how many things are happening at once. This can be especially true for stay at home moms because there is no escape. If you are the primary caretaker for your children in the mornings, it can feel like a lot of things are being placed on you without any relief. No one likes to start their mornings in a state of chaos, so here are some quick tips to help establish a morning routine for stay at home moms.
Prep activities and breakfast the night before.
I know, at the end of the night all you want to do is turn your brain off and get some sleep. But future you will be so thankful for another few minutes of prep work the night before. Get everything ready you need for breakfast in the morning, both for the kids and for yourself. Set out the plates, bowls, cups, and silverware so it's ready to go and know what food options are available in the morning. If you have school-aged kids, make sure their backpacks are set to go and any after school activities are accounted for as well. If you have littles who stay home, have an activity ready for them after breakfast so they will be entertained.
Wake up before the kids to start the day in quiet
This one takes some dedication, but I promise you it’s worth it. Getting up even 30 minutes before your kids usually do gives you the time to do something just for you. Maybe it’s getting to do an in-home workout class you like or spending a little longer in the shower.I love getting up a little bit earlier to enjoy my coffee while reading a book. There’s something so enjoyable about the quiet and still of your home in the morning hours. Easing yourself into the day and doing something just for you can help you feel accomplished and more relaxed.
Try to stay off screens for the first fifteen minutes
There are tons of reasons why immediately turning to your phone in the morning is a bad idea. The immediate inundation with notifications and social media content can put our brains in a tailspin from the start of the day. Try to avoid screens for at least the first fifteen minutes of the day to have a more relaxed start to the morning. Instead, consider using this time to do some journaling, meditation, or deep breathing exercises.
Set aside an activity the kids can do if you need a little more time to wake up
Of course there are those days where waking up before the kids just isn’t an option. Maybe the baby was up all night or you had a hard time sleeping. It’s totally okay to care for yourself in this way if you need it! On those mornings where waking up feels harder than normal, have something set aside for your little ones that keeps them occupied while you take your time getting up and around for the day. Maybe it’s a special craft or a super interactive book that only comes out during these situations. Or let’s be really honest, a few extra minutes of screen time.
Hopefully these tips help you to have easier mornings and feel a little more relaxed starting your days!
