10 Ideas for Self-Care at Home
We’ve said it before and we’ve said it again: self-care does not have to be a big elaborate production. We know that a lot of times when someone says self-care our minds immediately go to ways to escape. More often than not, these escapes require time and money that frankly not a lot of us have. This might be things like spa days, traveling, signing up for a new yoga membership, just to name a few. Now there’s nothing wrong with these things AT ALL. Girl, treat yourself if you have the means to do so! But the vast majority of us can’t do these big self-care items on a daily basis. And if you’ve been here a while, you know self-care should be happening every day.
Let’s say you’re at home and for whatever reason you can’t just up and leave, but you have some time to get in your daily dose of self-care. Here are some ideas of things you can do to recharge your batteries while you’re at home.
1. Take a shower or a bath
The warm water will help ease tension in your body and let’s be honest, you probably need to wash your hair anyways.
2. Read something in print
Put your phone away and pick up something physical to read. A book, magazine, or newspaper of your choice. The tactile feeling of your hands on the pages will help ground you and bring you to the present moment.
3. Meditate
Find a quiet place (yes, hiding inside closets counts) and work on your meditation and breath work. There are tons of incredible apps that have short guided meditations to help you if you’re just getting started.
4. Cook or bake something new
If food soothes your soul, take a look at what’s in your refrigerator and pantry and make yourself a snack. Be very intentional about slowing down and enjoying the process, rather than rushing through it.
5. Get crafty
We all have that craft project we started when we were convinced that we would make it our entire personality. Go ahead and pick it back up to see if it sparks something in you again. Maybe the timing was just off.
6. Journal
Write down how you’re feeling about your day or the things going on in your life. You don’t have to be the next award-winning author to journal. And remember, it’s for your eyes only, so don’t stress about being honest.
7. Create a playlist
Remember the days of burning CDs or recording songs from the radio onto a cassette tape? Those things took patience and love to create and the same can be done in the digital age with a playlist you can carry around on your phone. Take this one to the next level and dig out your old iPod.
8. Take a nap
There’s nothing wrong with resting for self care. In fact, I encourage it! Doing nothing or taking a nap is an excellent way to press the reset button during your day, even if it is just for a few minutes.
9. Go outside
Just because you have to be at home doesn’t mean you can’t go outdoors. You can take almost any of these activities outside with you too. Fresh air is a great reset for your nervous system and being outside is good for the soul.
10. Watch something
If you’ve been dying to catch up on some of your favorite TV shows, by all means do it. Even comfort shows count if watching them helps you to feel recharged afterwards.
There are so many other things you can do at home to check off your daily dose of self-care. If there are other things on your list that make you happy, go ahead and do them! Just because you’re at home doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in self-care. Whether you have ten minutes or a couple of hours, try something new to get your daily self-care and work towards putting back into yourself.
