Making MindfulnessYour Own
Mindfulness is a calming yet powerful technique of being fully aware of where you are and what you are feeling in that instant. It involves staying deeply in the present moment and being fully aware of your own space. It’s a form of meditation - taking in all that a moment has to offer and not judging it, but rather absorbing its essence, dissecting it peacefully, and making it your own. Mindfulness is your time and no one else’s.
Mindfulness is something that we all share and we all have it inside of us. It’s a reflection of ourselves that we initially have to capture and release. It takes some time to cultivate, and it usually takes some practice to be able to utilize.
How do you go about practicing mindfulness? It is optimal to be in an environment where there are minimal distractions, first thing in the morning for example. A quiet place works best. Placing a focus on breathing and nothing else is a common method, and refocusing as needed. Be calm and at peace with yourself and your surroundings. Some people like to be mindful while on a walk in nature or while they are exercising.
Mindfulness is a wonderful coping skill. The more that one practices mindfulness, the more effective one becomes at combating stress and anxiety.
Research says that mindfulness may be different for each individual, which makes it a little tricky to describe. When in the process of mindfulness, you know you are capturing the moment and it is yours. It’s individual and unique. Once one reaches that level of distinctiveness, it becomes a comfort zone that one yearns to repeat. Try mindfulness for yourself and you may be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to find a personal level of self-discovery and inner strength.
