Sweater Weather is Almost Here!
It’s almost time for sweater weather and we could not be more excited! All those cozy fall activities we love so much are kicking off every day: cooler days, cider mills, pumpkin patches, and so many other fun activities. Those of us who live in a four-season state are so lucky to see and experience each distinct season. But many times, as summer fades and fall comes into full view, we can start to feel not quite like ourselves. The biggest problem is the colder weather. Many of us just want to stay indoors cuddled up on the couch and have a hard time getting outside. While this sounds lovely for a day or maybe a weekend, over time, this can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness. Here are some ways to make this fall the best one yet and get ahead of those sweater weather blues.
Use Your Support System Daily
Utilize those around you who you trust and can help you out. Maybe a friend comes to watch your kids while you run errands for a few hours or you ask your cousin to drop off some groceries when it’s been a hectic day. The people you’ve deemed worthy to be a part of your support system are there for a reason! They want to see you happy and help you when you need it most. Your support system can also be there just to talk and listen. Call or text someone you trust and just chat on a regular basis.
Schedule Time with Other Moms
No one can relate to the struggles of parenting like other moms can. That’s why it’s incredibly important to make time to connect with other moms who are also in the thick of their parenting journey. They can offer support that others cannot and having a sounding board for your good and bad days is invaluable. Maintaining these connections is important for your mental health and can help with the feelings of not wanting to get out of the house. By making plans, you’re more likely to follow through and keep your commitments, which is good for your mind and your soul.
Get Outside Each Day
Yes, it’s colder outside. Yes, you might just want to stay indoors for tons of different reasons. But research shows that moving in sunlight is a must for warding off feelings of sadness and loneliness. Soaking in the sun’s rays even on a cold day can go a long way to helping you feel better. Plus there’s something so calming about being outside on a crisp fall day, feeling the chilled air fill your lungs. Remember, exercise and movement doesn’t always have to meet a requirement, just get up and move!
While there is so much to look forward to during the fall months, it’s also important to understand how the change of seasons can affect you mentally and physically. If you find yourself struggling and these methods aren’t helping, don’t be afraid to reach out to your doctor or mental health specialist for help.
