Pregnancy During a Pandemic

Here are some tips for pregnancy during this COVID pandemic:

Communicate your fears with your OB. Get on the same page with your doctor. ASK QUESTIONS. I like to go to my doctor with a list of questions and concerns and this is my 4th pregnancy. Pregnancy during a pandemic is scary and you do not have to feel awkward or embarrassed to ask ANYTHING pregnancy-related.

Get clear on your birth plan. One of the questions I like to ask my OB is, “What does it look like giving birth in the hospital right now?” I ask this at every visit because the answer changes every time. The things I want to know are: Are mothers required to wear masks during delivery? Can my husband be in the room? If I am vaccinated, can I walk the halls? Are mothers being discharged early to avoid exposure? I don’t want to be blindsided when the time comes to deliver this baby boy.

Stop watching COVID-19 horror stories on the news. Yes, terrible things are happening in relation to this pandemic all over the world and it is tragic however, you need to put your mental health first to maintain your healthy pregnancy.

Assert yourself. Be clear in your boundaries with family and friends. Set up guidelines you are comfortable with and stick to them. I think these boundaries are a personal preference. Give it some thought, make a decision, and move forward with it.
