3 Ways to Take a Mom Break

You know the feeling when you just can’t have anyone touching you anymore? Or maybe it’s not the physical touch so much that’s bothering you. Maybe it’s the noises. Maybe it’s the sight of your house being a mess. Maybe your entire body just feels like it wants to shut off. This experience in motherhood is very common and most people refer to it as being “touched out.”

Many moms experience this when their kids are really little. They’re often needing to be held or comforted throughout the day, or sometimes they’re just clingy little things who only want their mommy. These sensations are constantly being taken in by our bodies, whether it’s touch, sound, or sight. When there is an unending wave of sensory things coming into our bodies, our nervous systems, emotional systems, and brains need a break to reset from all that stress.

It might seem impossible to take a break from being touched out, or at least until you can get another adult in the room. But here are three quick things you can do to rest your mind even while your kids are still in the room.

Put Your Kids in the Bath

Water is soothing for everyone and a bath is the perfect contained place for your littles to play and splash around while you take a little mental break. Give them plenty of toys or bubbles to keep them occupied while you chill out for a little while.

Create a Fort for Quiet Time

There’s nothing better as a kid than getting to hide away in a fort. Make one out of pillows and blankets and tell them it’s a quiet time fort. They can play with their quiet toys or read a book while they’re inside. Make it extra fun and give them a flashlight to play with too!

Go for a Drive

Strap the kids in their carseats and drive around. It’s as simple as that. If it’s nice outside, roll down the windows and get some fresh air. Put on some of your favorite music. Just getting out of the over stimulating environment for a little while should help to calm your body down again.
