Mindfulness Breaks for Moms

Hey mama, yes you. When was the last time you took a mindfulness break? And no, it’s not right now. And no, it wasn’t when you were scrolling your phone late into the night when you probably should have been sleeping. And no, it wasn’t when you were hastily swiping makeup on your face in the name of self-care this morning in a frantic rush. Mindfulness is being present, completely in the moment, without distraction or hurry. Trust me, I’m fully aware that motherhood stops for very little and you might be feeling anxious about fitting a break or two into your day. Here are some super quick mindfulness breaks you can take throughout your day to reset your mind and return to the present moment.

Look at Something Very Closely

Pick up an object that you’ve never really studied. Take several minutes to learn every detail about it. The colors, the shapes, the lines, the weight of it in your hand. Only focus on this one object and nothing else.

Slowly Wash Your Hands

Make the water the perfect temperature and feel how it flows over your hands. Listen as the soap pumps out of the dispenser. Slowly lather the soap between your fingers and across your palms. Even indulge in a mini hand massage. Take your time drying your hands completely and finish with a moisturizer with another mini hand massage.

Make Some Noise

Use your voice to make some noise out loud. Take a deep breath before each noise you make. You can sing, chant, sigh, hum, or yell. Do whatever feels natural. The vibration throughout your body will energize you for the rest of your day and the deep breaths will bring back balance.

Go Outside

Regardless of the weather or temperature, taking a five minute break and going outside can completely change your perspective. Take some deep breaths while you listen to the noises of being outdoors. Take in what you can see: animals, plants, people, leaves, or even snow.

Dance

Put on your favorite song and just move around. Jump up and down or sway side to side. Moving your entire body will get your blood flowing again. Think about the way the music sounds and the lyrics while you dance around.

Simply Rest

Lay down on your back somewhere comfortable, close your eyes, and just breathe. Focus on your breath and the way your lungs fill each time. Begin to feel the calm wash over you as your breath deepens and your muscles relax.
