Ways to Model Healthy Behaviors for Your Kids

We all know our kids look up to us moms. They want to do the things we do and be just like us,  of course, some more than others. A lot of what our kids learn about life and how to be a person in the world is by how we act and the things we do on a daily basis. Not to add any more pressure to an already stressful situation, but our kids need us to be great models of healthy behaviors that will follow them into their adult years. It doesn’t have to be elaborate or over the top, but here are six things you can do to model healthy behaviors for your kids.

Practice Meditation and Mindfulness Together

Take the time to practice breathing and focusing on just being in a space with your kids. We have all become so accustomed to running around from one thing to another without taking a break to just be. Teaching your kids the importance of returning to a calm space when they need to is so important.

Apologize When You Make a Mistake

Teaching your kids how to take ownership of their actions is an important skill they will use over and over again. Erasing the stigma behind making mistakes will help to grow more confident and compassionate human beings.

Have Bedtimes to Prioritize Rest

We know sleep is important for kids, but they don’t always know why. Everyone needs sleep for our bodies to be able to recharge and solidify memories and learning from the day. Rest is an incredibly important part of being healthy mentally and physically.

Talk About Food in Terms of Energy Vs. Good or Bad

I think we’ve come a long way in this department since the diet scene of the 90s, but there is still more that can be done. Food is food, no matter what. Some foods allow us to feel more energized and can help us focus better, while others might make us sleepy or send us on a sugar high. Taking away the labels of good vs. bad with food helps kids to learn what fuels their bodies and makes them feel better on the inside.

Involve your Kids in Movement vs. Exercice

Similar to the way we frame food, we want to show our kids the importance of moving their bodies every day. This doesn’t have to be a certain type of activity, intensity, or length of time for it to “count.” Taking the dog for a walk, dancing around, or just playing in the backyard are all great ways to move your body.

Set Times to Practice Self Care

Everyone should be practicing self care on a daily basis. It doesn’t have to be expensive or take hours of your day. Even kids need to practice regular self care for the benefit of their mental health. Self care for kids might look like reading a book, drawing a picture, running in the yard, or talking with a grandparent on the phone.

By taking these simple tips and incorporating them into your daily routines, you will be on your way to raising amazing kids who are super aware of their bodies and minds and know how to best take care of them.
